A Pretty Parasite

The spectacular orange flowers of the Western Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia floribunda) appear like Christmas decorations in early summer.

But the Christmas Tree has a hidden agenda. Underground, its roots seek out other plant roots and steal nutrients to help it survive in the poor soils of the coastal plain.

A variety of plants fall prey to the Christmas Tree. Even grasses can host this adaptable parasite.
